“Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinksy” is the second film about Coco Chanel that I’ve seen in the last few years. I’m not all that interested in the fashion world, so I figured a biopic about Ms. Chanel would be equally as uninteresting. That was not so, though, as Anne Fontaine’s “Coco Before Chanel” was one of my favorite films of 2009. The difference is that Coco’s life leading up to the events in “Coco & Igor” was more of a whimsical, rags-to-riches tale and not the melodramatic story of a power-hungry whore, which this film turns out to be.

It looks pretty, sounds pretty and is pretty. The big downfall is the lack of plot. The entire film is one big jewelers commercial — shots of passion and epic music. We don’t care about the characters and we don’t care about their relationship — or lack thereof. The only characters who seem to have any sort of emotion and connection to the audience are cast away as if they were lepers.

I understand that the film is based on possible true events, but the events here aren’t interesting enough to make into a film. Just because it’s based true story doesn’t make it entertaining. You know, the paper clip was invented by Samuel B. Fay in 1867, so why hasn’t anyone made a movie about that yet? Because it’s terribly boring.

Let me add that Mads Mikkelsen is fantastic as Stravinsky. I’ll take Audrey Tautou as Coco any day, though.
