If you thought you already loved an indie dramedy, then get ready to be unfaithful because if you see “Juno” and don’t instantly fall in love this film, you are a cold, dark person with a hole in your heart.
Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) is a sarcastically brilliant teen. What she lacks physically, she makes up for mentally. Just like any other outsider high school teen she runs into a predicament, the much feared and always dreaded teen pregnancy. Her partner in crime Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera), a tall, bony track star with a heart of gold, stands by her side in which ever decision she decides to make. An abortion would have been the easy way out, but then again, we wouldn’t have much of a movie would we? Plus did you know your baby has fingernails? Moving on to decision number two, Juno and her free-spirited friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby) look through the penny savers for a couple who could nurture and raise her love child. The proverbial finger lands on none other than Mark and Vanessa Loring (Jason Bateman & Jennifer Garner).
As the film progresses it goes from a light-hearted comedy to a heavy-hearted drama. After all, we are dealing with a human life here. The drama initially begins when Mark starts getting cold feet about becoming a father and completely losing the life he had before. This sets the wheels in motion. The characters begin to let it all out emotionally and put everything they have on the table for what they want and love.
Juno brought something to the screen that has been missing for quite some time. It brought character. It made the screen a world of it’s own. Its as if you suddenly aren’t worried so much about what’s going on in your life but instead you’re concerned, happy, nervous, or in love with one of the characters on the screen.
I feel inclined to mention, amongst the great acting in this film, two smaller characters who shine like high beams on a black night. J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney bring a hysterical partnership to the screen as Mac and Bren Macguff. Please pick up this dvd as soon as possible, and don’t rent it because you’re just going to wish you owned it afterwards.
